With the arrival of new multi-axle and double driven models for the DAF XD, XF, XG and XG+ Electric, a zero-emission solution is now available for almost all transport applications. The vehicles combine efficient and powerful powertrains featuring PACCAR EX-D1 and EX-D2 e-motors with unsurpassed comfort and optimal all-round vision. And thanks to the modular positioning of the battery packs and smart bodybuilder preparations, DAF makes the transition to electric vehicles economically appealing.

FTG and FTN Electric: 6x2 tractors with steered pusher or trailing axle

The DAF XD, XF, XG and XG+ Electric are now also available as 6x2 tractor for heavy-duty applications. The FTG chassis is equipped with either a steered or non-steered pusher axle, while the FTN always features a steered trailing axle.

An electric truck with an FTG configuration is unique in the truck industry and ideal for transport in which extra payload and an optimal axle load ratio are important. This makes the FTG suitable for heavy-duty distribution applications, as well as – for instance – the transport of construction materials. The steered pusher axle also guarantees the highest level of yard friendliness.

If maximum manoeuvrability is also required in addition to a high payload, then the FTN is the ideal choice. With its steered trailing axle, this tractor is perfect for urban distribution and transport in which a vehicle has to perform many different manoeuvres.

Both the FTG and FTN models of the DAF XD, XF, XG and XG+ Electric are equipped with the powerful PACCAR EX-D2 engine, with outputs ranging from 270 kW (370 hp) to 350 kW (480 hp). The FTG with pusher axle comes with three battery packs as standard, while the FTN with trailing axle offers the choice of three, four and even five packs for zero-emission ranges of over 500 kilometres on a single battery charge.

The fact that the DAF XD, XF, XG and XG+ Electric are able to accommodate GCWs of up to 50 tonnes, means that electric EcoCombi versions are also possible.

FAS Electric: 6x2 rigid with trailing axle

DAF’s programme of fully electric rigids already includes not only 4x2 (FA) models but also 6x2 models with a steered pusher (FAG) or a steered trailing axle (FAN). Specifically for applications that require a high static payload, DAF is now introducing the electric 6x2 FAS rigid with a GVW of up to 28 tonnes.
The FAS features a double-mounted trailing axle with a load capacity of 10 tonnes. This makes it ideal for tippers and trucks
with demountable container systems where the entire weight of the load is resting briefly on the third axle during loading and unloading. As an option, a liftable third axle is available to reduce limit energy consumption and tyre wear.

The fact that the DAF XD, XF, XG and XG+ Electric are available as FAS models with 3 to 5 battery packs makes them suitable for a wide variety of uses, thanks also to the wide range of outputs offered by the PACCAR EX-D1 and PACCAR EX-D2 e-motors: from 170 kW (230 hp) to 350 kW (480 hp). Zero-emission ranges of over 500 kilometres are now possible, depending on applications and the number of battery packs.

FAT and FAW Electric: 6x4 and 8x4 rigids with double driven tandem

For use in the construction industry and other heavy-duty applications that require double driven tandems, DAF is now expanding the XD, XF, XG and XG+ Electric range with 6x4 FAT and 8x4 FAW models. With a robust 21-tonne tandem set (with single or hub reduction; leaf spring or air suspension) and maximum traction, these new electric vehicles feel perfectly at home on every construction site. In addition, the 6x4 FAT is also available with DAF’s light-weight 19-tonne tandem set.

Thanks to its 6x4 configuration with double driven rear axles, the Electric FAT provides maximum grip on rough terrain. This makes the vehicle, with a GVW of 29 tonnes, more than suitable for tipper and concrete mixer applications.

With a steered trailing axle behind the dual drive tandem set, the FAW Electric even goes one step further. This 8x4 configuration (GVW: 37 tonnes) is ideal for tipper applications and demountable container systems in combination with a crane, as well as for the transport of large volumes of sand, gravel and asphalt. The steered trailing axle offers a surprisingly high level of manoeuvrability.

The fully electric FAT and FAW rigids can be equipped with both PACCAR EX-D1 and PACCAR EX-D2 e-motors. There is also a choice of three, four or five battery packs.

The 6x4 FAT is also available as a Construction model. The XDC and XFC versions feature a large ground clearance of 40 centimetres (depending on tyre size) and an approach angle of 25°. The XDC and XFC Electric are distinguished by the sturdy grille, a steel radiator protection plate, a bumper with recessed LED lighting and the optional flexible bottom step.

Powertrains

The XD, XF, XG and XG+ Electric make use of the powerful and efficient PACCAR EX-1 and EX-2 e-motors. These power units, situated midship, are available with outputs ranging from 170 kW (230 hp) to 350 kW (480 hp) and maximum torques of 1500 Nm and 2400 Nm, respectively. The newly developed 3-step direct drive transmission with planetary gearing set guarantees a low weight, high efficiency and extremely smooth gear-shifting for the highest level of driving comfort and maximum efficiency. The One Pedal Drive also contributes to this. It allows the accelerator pedal to be used both to increase speed and to slow down. The lower part of pedal travel is for acceleration, while the upper part can be used for regenerative braking. One Pedal Drive can be activated using the engine brake switch on the steering column and the driver can choose for various levels of braking power (33%, 66% or 100% of the total braking power).

Major benefits of LFP batteries

To be able to optimally tailor electric vehicles to customer needs and applications, DAF offers an extensive series of battery compositions ranging from 2 to 5 packs (210 to 525 kWh). DAF uses only the newest generation of lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries. These are both cobalt- and nickel-free and boast a very long lifespan. The LFP batteries can also be charged up to 100% on a regular basis without impacting their lifespan.

The liquid-cooled LFP batteries used by DAF also have a high thermal stability, which contributes to increased safety, and they come with an 8-year warranty.

Highest bodybuilder friendliness as standard

Thanks to the flexible and modular positioning of the battery packs on the chassis, the XD, XF, XG and XG+ Electric offer an extremely high level of bodybuilder friendliness. The position of the packs can be adjusted to meet the specific application of the vehicle, which in turn creates space for the fitting of side-loader garbage superstructure or mounting crane legs. A 650 V e-PTO (25 kW, 60kW and 100 kW) is available as an option for powering an electric cooling, demountable or tipper installation.

The newest models of the XD, XF, XG and XG+ Electric also benefit from DAF’s close collaboration with leading bodywork manufacturers throughout Europe. As a result, the superstructure components and connectors can be easily mounted on the chassis. This simplifies the bodybuilding process and guarantees faster vehicle availability. Thanks to the advanced software integration, both vehicle and superstructure are able to communicate easily with each other, which enables (partial) operation of the superstructure from inside the cab and access to vehicle functions from the superstructure.

Supporting the energy transition

In addition to a full programme of innovative electric trucks, DAF also provides a complete package of services to support transport operators in their energy transition. These range from specific driver training programmes and detailed route planning to the supply of charging stations and energy storage systems to the provision of specific information via the PACCAR Connect online fleet management platform. It is this combination of products and services that makes DAF the best partner in the energy transition.

Strong DNA

“Naturally, the DAF XD, XF, XG and XG+ Electric with the new axle configurations also feature the same distinctive DNA as the current series of New Generation DAF trucks”, says Jeroen van den Oetelaar, member of the Board of Management and Director of Product Development. “As a result, they are also setting the standard in their segment with regard to safety, comfort and ease of use. Thanks to the very wide range of models, cabs, engines and chassis, DAF is able to offer tailor-made solutions for every transport application, including electric.’
